How to Grow Avalanche Snow Peas from Seed

Direct sow pea seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Pea seeds germinate in cool soil, and established young plants tolerate light frosts. Because pea roots are sensitive to disturbance, direct sowing is generally recommended over indoor starting.

Choose a location with full sun and rich, well-drained soil amended with compost. Provide a small trellis, netting, or other suitable support at planting time to help keep the plants upright as they grow.

Space seeds approximately 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) apart in rows spaced 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist during germination, flowering, and pod development.

Harvest frequently when the pods are flat, crisp, and tender, before the seeds inside become noticeably swollen. Regular harvesting encourages continued pod production while growing conditions remain favourable.

Growing Snow Peas in Canada

Avalanche snow peas are well suited to Canadian gardens, thriving during the cool spring growing season. Their tolerance of fluctuating temperatures makes them a useful choice for early-season harvests, while late-summer sowings may provide an additional autumn crop where the growing season allows.

In soils without established populations of suitable nitrogen-fixing bacteria, a pea-specific inoculant may help encourage root nodulation. Apply a light layer of mulch around established plants to retain soil moisture during dry spells.
