Beet | Babybeat

$3.95

Grow perfectly round, sweet, and tender mini beets of Babybeat in your home garden. This exceptional true baby beet variety is prized for its early harvest, compact growth habit, and smooth, deep red roots with an elevated sweetness and a fine, crunchy texture that won't get woody if left a little longer in the ground.

These reliable plants produce heavy yields of uniform mini roots and nutritious, medium-green tops throughout the growing season, making them an ideal and rewarding addition to small garden spaces, raised beds, or containers. Direct sow seeds in early spring for Canada's cool northern climate, as beets thrive and develop their best deep color and flavor in cooler weather.

How to Grow Babybeat Beets from Seed

Direct sow beet seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked and has warmed to at least 7°C (45°F). Because beet roots are sensitive to disturbance, direct sowing is strongly recommended over indoor starting. Soak seeds overnight in warm water before planting to significantly speed up germination.

Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and loose, rich, well-drained soil free of large stones. Sow seeds approximately 13 mm (1/2 inch) deep, spaced about 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) apart in rows.

Thin seedlings when plants are 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) tall to a final spacing of 7–10 cm (3–4 inches apart) to give roots room to size up properly. Use the thinned seedlings as delicious microgreens or salad greens.

Water consistently and evenly throughout the growing season to ensure rapid growth and prevent roots from becoming woody or split. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest all season long.

Growing Beets in Canada

Babybeat beets are exceptionally well-suited to Canadian climates, thriving in the cool, moisture-rich spring and autumn shoulder seasons. Their quick 40-day turnaround makes them exceptionally reliable for northern short-season gardens.

Keep beds well-weeded while plants are young, and apply a light mulch to retain soil moisture during dry summer stretches.
