Leek | Large Musselburg

¥20.00

Grow thick, tender, and deeply flavorful white shafts of Large Musselburg leeks in your home garden. Originating in Scotland in the early 1800s, this historic heirloom variety is world-renowned for its legendary cold hardiness, broad fan-like blue-green leaves, and exceptionally sweet, mild onion-like flavor that enriches autumn soups, stews, quiches, and roasts.

These robust plants produce thick, heavy stems reaching 2–3 inches in diameter with a tender, non-stringy texture that holds up beautifully in the kitchen. Perfectly suited to Canada's cool climate, Large Musselburg leeks thrive through frosty autumn temperatures and can even be harvested fresh from under winter snow in milder regions.

How to Grow Large Musselburg Leeks from Seed

Start leek seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last spring frost date. Sow seeds approximately 6 mm (1/4 inch) deep in flat trays filled with a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix.

Keep soil consistently moist and maintain warm temperatures around 18–21°C (65–70°F) until germination occurs. Trim indoor tops to 3–4 inches to build strong, thick bases before planting outdoors.

Harden off seedlings carefully and transplant outdoors in late spring once soil can be worked. Plant in individual dibbled holes 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep, spaced 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart in rows spaced 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Do not fill the holes with soil; water gently to let soil settle naturally around roots.

As leeks grow, hill loose soil around the stems progressively to blanch the shafts, keeping them long, tender, and pure white.

Growing Leeks in Canada

Large Musselburg leeks are custom-made for Canadian climates, having been bred to withstand the harsh, damp cold of Scottish winters. They excel in cool spring soil and perform exceptionally well through late autumn frost, becoming sweeter as temperatures drop.

Maintain consistent soil moisture and apply a thick layer of organic compost or straw mulch to protect root zones and keep soil cool through warm summer spells.
