How to Grow Toy Choy Bok Choy from Seed

Direct sow bok choy seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before your last spring frost date. Sow repeatedly through late summer for continuous harvests through autumn.

Sow seeds approximately 6 mm (1/4 inch) deep and 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart in rows spaced 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart. Thin emerging seedlings to a final spacing of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart to allow space for compact mini heads to form.

Select a location in full sun to partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive, well-draining soil. Water consistently to promote quick growth and keep stems extra tender and sweet.

Harvest whole mini heads at the soil line when plants reach 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) tall, or snip outer leaves for continuous cut-and-come-again harvesting.
