How to Grow Bright Lights Swiss Chard from Seed

Direct sow Swiss chard seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or start indoors 3–4 weeks prior to your last spring frost date. Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 15–30 minutes before planting to encourage faster, more uniform germination.

Sow seeds approximately 13 mm (1/2 inch) deep and 5 cm (2 inches) apart in rows spaced 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Because each multi-germ seed cluster produces several sprouts, thin seedlings when they reach 7–10 cm (3–4 inches) tall to a final spacing of 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart.

Choose a location receiving full sun or partial shade with loose, well-draining soil enriched with organic compost. Water deeply and consistently to keep leaves tender and juicy.

Harvest outer leaves continuously by snipping them near the base when they reach 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) long, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing for a perpetual harvest.

Growing Swiss Chard in Canada

Bright Lights Swiss chard is exceptionally well-suited to Canadian growing conditions, thriving across Canadian growing zones 2 through 9. It bridges the summer gap beautifully when cool-season greens like spinach and lettuce bolt in peak heat.

In spring and late autumn, light frosts actually enhance the sweetness of the leaves and stalks, giving you fresh, vibrant garden greens late into the fall season.
