Grow sweet, tender, and coreless carrots in your home garden. Carrots are a quintessential root vegetable favorite, prized for their crisp texture and exceptional sweetness in salads, fresh snacking, and culinary dishes.

These classic French heirloom plants produce an abundant harvest of uniform, cylindrical roots throughout the growing season, making them a rewarding addition to any vegetable patch. Direct sow seeds outdoors once soil can be worked in early spring for Canada's shorter growing season.

How to Grow Carrots from Seed

Direct sow carrot seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, up to several weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds about 6 mm (¼ inch) deep in loose, well-worked, stone-free soil and keep consistently moist until germination.

Carrots require loose, deeply dug soil free of rocks to prevent forking and misshapen roots. Thin seedlings early to about 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) apart to allow proper room for root expansion.

Keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination, as crusting over heavy soil can prevent delicate seedlings from emerging.

Water consistently throughout the growing season, as erratic moisture can cause roots to split or develop a woody texture.

Growing Carrots in Canada

Carrots thrive in cool-to-moderate spring and fall weather. Canadian gardeners in cooler regions benefit from direct sowing in well-drained raised beds or loose garden soil that warms up quickly in the spring.

Ensure stones and heavy clay are amended with organic matter to encourage straight, beautiful roots. Mulching lightly can help retain surface moisture during the slow germination period.
