How to Grow Olympia Spinach from Seed

Direct sow spinach seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or plant in late summer for an autumn harvest. Because spinach roots dislike being disturbed, direct sowing is strongly recommended.

Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and rich, well-drained soil amended with compost. Space plants approximately 15–25 cm (6–10 inches) apart with a spread of 15–20 cm (6–8 inches).

Water consistently and evenly, keeping the soil moist during active growth. Olympia spinach thrives in cooler temperatures and benefits from steady moisture to help prevent premature bolting.

Harvest outer leaves first ("cut-and-come-again") to encourage the plant to continue producing fresh new growth from the centre throughout the season.

Growing Spinach in Canada

Olympia spinach is exceptionally well-suited to Canadian climates, capable of germinating in cool soils and handling early-season frosts. It is one of the premier cool-season crops for extending the northern gardening season.

Use mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and keep leaves clean from splashing soil during heavy spring rains.
